LOS LUNAS — Around 40 protesters showed up with signs and slogans on Tuesday as part of Valencia County Indivisible’s “Free Speech Rally” at the corner of Main Street and Luna Avenue in Los Lunas Tuesday morning.

Many of the signs directly addressed concerns about free speech in the wake of recent events, such as the suspension of late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel and the backlash to posts commenting on the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk, including the recent online incident that caused the Los Lunas Schools to take action at Bosque Farms Elementary last week.

Dana Calderwood, 70, said she has attended actions in Los Lunas and Albuquerque as part of Indivisible and came from Bosque Farms to emphasize the “Importance of free speech and how it can’t be infringed on.

“Of course, the most notable thing is the FCC coming out and threatening what media can and can’t do. Freedom of the press is pretty important,” she said.

Deb Christiensen, 83, of Los Lunas, said she came to the protest specifically to protest the Los Lunas Schools-BFE incident as well as other attacks on free speech recently.

“I think it’s very scary,” she said, “and of course, the things the president is saying, wanting to go after anybody who speaks negatively about him. That’s very disturbing.

“My two sons went to Los Lunas High School. They’re Tigers and they feel like they had a good education. So I’m very disappointed in the superintendent.”

Valencia County Indivisible co-founder Doug Vandewinckel said Tuesday’s protest was put together quickly as a response. He said the progressive grassroots group is planning another large rally in October.
