Heritage Buckle presented in Valencia County
New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association (NMCGA) recently presented the 2025 Buckle Heritage winner in Valencia County.
“I’m thankful that these kids are dedicating their time to consider our agricultural future.” said Dave Kenneke, NMCGA Northwest Regional Vice President.
Sophia Chavez was named the Heritage Buckle winner in Valencia County.
To be eligible for the Heritage Buckle award, youth ages 9-15 were asked to write a 200-500-word essay explaining, “What new innovative technologies or practices would you implement to address the current or future needs of agriculture?”
When asked what new technologies or practices they would implement in the future of agriculture, Chavez wrote, “Precision farming, this is a farming management that uses informational technology and other technology like GPS. Which is to ensure that crops and soil receive everything they need for optimal health and productivity.
"On our farm we use drip irrigation and plastic covers to create a weed barrier. The drip irrigation lets us get all the nutrients to the plants for higher production with less acreage.”
“Thank you to our sponsors. We appreciate your support in bringing this program to life,” said NMCGA President Bronson Corn.
