TOME — A clogged culvert in Tomé has closed down a road for most of this week.

Lina Benavidez, Valencia County’s public works director, said county crews will be doing an emergency replacement of the culvert under Tomé Hill Road, where the La Constancia Lateral passes underneath.

“We’ll be doing the replacement on Wednesday and, if everything goes well, we should be done by end-of-day Thursday,” Benavidez said. “We will replace the culvert, then compact and pave the roadway.”

It appears the culvert became clogged and began eroding the dirt under the roadway on Saturday, she said.

“The road is closed to traffic. If a large vehicle goes over, it could collapse,” the director said. “The culvert is pretty torn up.”

Other roads drivers can use to get through the area include Entrada Aragon Road to the south of Tomé Hill Road, which connects to La Entrada Road and Sandhill Road.

Benavidez said if anyone has questions, they can call the Valencia County Public Works department at 505-866-2473.
