The new board of directors for the Valencia County Arroyo Flood Control District met on Jan. 15 to select officers and determine the length of terms each member will hold until the 2027 elections.

Since the district was approved by voters in the November 2024 election and a board of directors appointed by a district court judge in early 2025, all five seats were on the ballot for the 2025 Regular Local Election.

Two incumbents — Danny Goodson and Michael Montoya — ran for reelection, and they were joined by three new candidates on the ballot — Brenda Hume, Tyler Otero and Charles Schick.

State statutes requires the board members to draw lots at their organizational meeting to determine staggered initial terms. Two members will serve two-year terms, two will serve four-years and one will serve a six-year term.

At the January meeting, Goodson and Schick drew the two-year terms, Hume and Montoya will serve for four years and Otero drew the six-year term. As the original terms expire, those elected to the positions will serve for six years.

The board members also voted on their officers for the year. Hume will serve as chairwoman, Montoya is vice chairman, Schick is secretary and Goodson will serve as the treasurer.

“The board’s immediate focus is on getting basic functionality as a government entity in place,” said Hume. “The board wishes to thank the original directors for all their hard work, and will build on the foundation they created.”

Regular meetings for the VCAFCD will be at 6 p.m., the first Thursday of the month, at the Valencia County administration building, 444 Luna Ave., Los Lunas, in the Valencia County Commission chambers.

Hume noted the May meeting will be held on the last Thursday of April due to the chambers being used for early voting during the 2026 primaries.
