LAGUNA — A Highland Meadows woman was shot and injured by a Laguna police officer after she allegedly pointed a gun at officers and other first responders.

At about 11:45 a.m., on Tuesday, July 30, LPD officers responded to a call for a welfare check on N.M. 6 in the community of Highland Meadows on the far west side of Valencia County.

A woman, later identified as Georgia Martinez Rubio, 43, was reported to be on the side of the road, seemingly in distress. When emergency medical service personnel arrived on scene, they found Rubio, crying.

As the ambulance began to pull over to assist, Rubio allegedly pointed a firearm at the EMS crew. The driver left the scene and notified Laguna police officers.

When LPD officers arrived, Rubio pointed the gun in the direction of the officers, according to a recent press release from the New Mexico State Police.

At least one officer shot Rubio, who was transported to a hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. NMSP reported no officers were injured during the incident.

The press releases continued, saying NMSP Investigations Bureau agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney’s office.
