No, voting Americans were wrong

Editor:

You’re right, Mr. Garza, Americans did elect Mr. Trump to the White House again. It was hardly a “landslide” as you describe it.

Mr. Trump’s popular vote “victory” was one of the smallest ever recorded in a presidential election. “By the skin of this teeth” might be a more apt description of his victory.

For a variety of reasons, a small majority of voters did want what Mr. trump was offering: racist immigration policies, attempts to overthrow our constitution, the legitimization of anti-LGBTQ, anti-Moslem, antisemitic, anit-Black, anti-Hispanic and anti-women ate, favoring benefits to the ultra rich at the expense of education, health and welfare programs for the poor, increasing threats to our personal liberties and privacy while he continues his lunatic and demented fantasies of autocratic dictatorship.

But, Mr. Garza, the American people made a mistake, and now all indications are that they are realizing it. Mr. Trump’s 41 percent approval rating after his first 100 days is the lowest in more than 80 years.

The Republican-dominated Congress has an approval rating of 12 percent. It does not appear the American People are clambering for what the MAGA-controlled Republican Party is offering.

Americans are beginning to see the facts of Mr. Trump’s administration — in spite of far-right attempts at propaganda — and are experiencing buyer’s remorse. You predict that there will be fewer Democrats in Washington the next election cycle. I hope you’re not putting money on that.

His voting numbers weren’t that great

Editor:

A recent letter to the News-Bulletin laid out the writer’s opinion on Republicans vs Democrats. In short, he thinks MAGA Republicans are totally wonderful for the nation and Democrats are completely useless and vile.

Since this is just his opinion — just generalized ranting — I can’t argue with it. It’s probably what actually goes on in the writer’s head.

It’s when he tries to get specific that the trouble starts. He pointed out that a recent book argued that former president Joe Biden wasn’t actually as sharp as he used to be, a claim the media has been pounding away at for a couple of weeks, while “sane-washing” Donald Trump’s melt-down into a puddle of lies and tantrums. One reputable news source counted up 30,000 lies from Trump during his first term. This is not normal.

Then he complained about the two impeachments of Trump during his first term and the continuing flood of lawsuits. It’s not because Democrats are being mean to Trump. It’s because we’ve never before had a president who so completely ignored our laws in his efforts to break down the guardrails of democracy and steal the country blind.

And the letter writer claims that voters “gave Trump ... an unprecedented landslide victory.” Oh, please! Trump won the popular vote by about 1.5 percent, maybe .015 of the total voters in this country, one of the smallest wins in history. Only in the minds of Trump and his followers was it a “landslide victory.”
