Belen boys on top at Kirby Invitational

BELEN — The host Belen Eagles boys took the top spot at the Leonard Kirby Invitational, a dual wrestling meet, while Valencia was third in the girl’s competition.

BHS downed three teams to advance to the finals, defeating Roswell 49-21 for the title. Cleveland, with a mixture of varsity and sub-varsity wrestlers, took third.

The VHS boys did not place in the ten-team tournament.

Marinus Sanchez, Tommy Freeman, Joshua Jaramillo and Larry Duran each went 4-0 for BHS. Yovan Suarez went undefeated for Valencia.

In the girls’ bracket, Alexis Avis-Labus and Adrianna Bernie both went undefeated, 6-0, to lead Valencia.

Belen tied for fourth, with Olyvia Sanchez also going undefeated.

Wednesday, after the News-Bulletin print deadline, Valencia hosted both Belen and Grants in a coed district duals meet.

The NMAA Girls Region 2 Championships will be contested Friday and Saturday at BHS.

Wrestlers from 35 schools, including Belen, Los Lunas and Valencia, will compete for berths in the state meet Feb. 21-22 at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
