BELEN — Evan Currier, of Iron Lotus Martial Arts in Belen, has been named winner of the Rising Star Award by the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame, which includes induction into the organizations Hall of Fame.

“I was completely taken aback,” said Currier, 19, who is passionate about teaching martial arts. “I get to see that they (his students) are growing, that they are learning something new,” both physically and spiritually. “That always puts a smile on my face.”

According to the USMAHOF, induction “is a unique honor as it is comprised solely of martial artists who have made a difference in the lives of others.”

Currier was nominated by Dr. Spencer Fusselman, the owner of Iron Lotus Martial Arts.

“Not only is (Currier) an extremely talented martial artist, but he teaches with passion and patience and understanding,” said Fusselman. “He wants to make a lasting impact.”

“I don’t look at myself,” Currier said. “I want to look at others and see how I can help them.”
