Belen’s Scott, Los Lunas’ Castillo earn district POY honor

Post season awards for high school baseball and softball teams are starting to come in, with All-State selections on the horizon.

Many Valencia County athletes were recognized with district honors.

Belen’s Lorissa Scott, who will play at Eastern New Mexico University next season, was named both the softball Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year in District 5-4A.

In addition, Scott earned All Academic status and was named All-Metro at second base by the Albuquerque Journal. All-Metro honorees on the second-team were Honey Mirabal, BHS, designated hitter; and from Los Lunas, third baseman Jacelyn Baca and outfielder Kelsie DeGraaf.

Also receiving postseason softball accolades were Belen’s Oscar Medrano, who was selected to coach the Gold team in the New Mexico High School Coaches Association All Star Weekend and Patrick Ortiz of Los Lunas, who was named the District 5-5A Coach of the Year.

In baseball, Los Lunas senior pitcher Matthew Castillo was named District 5-5A Player of the Year and All-Metro second team at shortstop.
