The wrestling season is underway, with the host Los Lunas boys finishing second in the Tom Torres Duals, while Belen took the boys title, and the BHS girls captured third at tournaments in Santa Fe.

In the Jaguar Invitational, the Belen boys had an impressive showing against 18 teams. The Eagles scored 279 points to take first, followed by West Las Vegas with 215.5.

BHS had four individual champions: Mason Carillo (106), Manny Valdez (132), Jeremy Trujeque (190) and Ryder Williamson (285). Seven other Eagles finished runner-up.

In the Lady Jaguars Invitational, Miyamura (204) and Grants (158.5) topped the field with Belen third (121). The Eagles had three champions with Olyvia Sanchez (115), Linsey Sanchez (120) and Azana Williams (130).

Tom Torres Duals

As usual, the Tom Torres Duals at LLHS had some real heavyweights. In addition to the Tigers, who were sixth at the 2025 5A state championship, 5A state runner-up Cleveland and regional titlist Atrisco Heritage Academy were in the field of teams.

With that as a background, LLHS finished the duals 4-1, the only blemish a lopsided loss to Cleveland in the championship match. However, to reach the final, Los Lunas had victories over AHA (49-26), Las Cruces (43-35) and Sandia (69-12).

“I’m proud of my guys,” said Steve Chavez, LLHS coach.

Chavez said among the standout performers were Nava Gurule at 120-pounds, Noah Chavez at 132, along with 215-pounder Elias Serafin. Each lost just one match.

Jorgen Booth, on top, is about to register a pin for Valencia Saturday in the Tom Torres Duals in Los Lunas.

The Tigers’ Andres Romero, who had a quick pin at 144-pounds against his opponent from Sandia, believes Los Lunas will compete for a top three finish this season.

“We have a really solid lineup, top to bottom. We have studs all around.”

For Valencia, a sixth-place finish in a field of 11 teams was encouraging. The Jaguars posted victories over St. Pius, Tucumcari and Centennial.

First-year VHS head coach Shawn Avis-Labus said, “the kids are adjusting to the new program,” well.

Avis-Labus says VHS practices have been crowded.

“We’ve got more kids than we know what to do with, so wrestle-offs are really interesting. We’re on path for some great success this season,” Avis-Labus commented from the stands during a break in the action.
