More than $3,000 in scholarship money was raised Saturday for students in Valencia County at the 17th annual Capt. Tamara Long-Archuleta Memorial Open Karate Championships at Belen High School. There were 165 competitors from 16 clubs, including host Belen Goju Ryu Karate. Iron Lotus Karate in Belen and Rosales Karate & Kickboxing in Los Lunas also took part. Richard and Cindy Long, of Belen Goju Ryu Karate, were pleased with the tournament and will be sponsoring the championship again next year. The event is named after their daughter, Tamara Long-Archuleta, who died in a 2003 accident in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom while co-piloting a helicopter on a rescue mission.
