Belen’s Sophia Cox, at the Sepulveda Meet of Champions, had three runner-up finishes at the Harper Invitational track meet.

ALBUQERQUE — Despite not taking a first-place medal, Sophia Cox, a Belen sophomore, had one of the most impressive efforts Friday and Saturday at the Richard Harper Invitational at Albuquerque Academy.

With state qualifying times (SQ), Cox was the runner-up by the narrowest of margins in three events at the talent-laden track meet.

Cox was second in the 100 meters (12.27), 200 meters (25.69), and 400 meters (58.63). The performance solidifies Cox as a serious contender in each event May 16-17 at the 4A State Track and Field Championships.

Showing off her versatility was Los Lunas senior McKaylee Burt, who will play soccer at Adams State University.

Burt finished top 10 in three events, all in state qualifying times — fourth in the 400 meters (100.53), sixth in triple jump (34-5.25) and 10th in the 800 meters (2:25.99).
