District Basketball Tournaments In Full Swing

District tournament play is underway for high school basketball teams.

In boys District 5-5A, Los Lunas (21-6) broke a three-way tie and earned a state tournament berth by defeating Rio Grande 68-35 in a playoff. The Tigers were scheduled Wednesday to host Capital.

In District 5-4A boys’ hoops, Belen (4-23) fell 59-39 to St. Pius, while Valencia (13-14) pulled away to down Grants 76-63. The Jaguars were set to play Wednesday at St. Pius.

Tuesday in District 5-4A girls’ basketball, Valencia (18-9) defeated Grants 54-34, and Belen (8-18) lost at Highland 65-27. In District 5-5A, Los Lunas (6-21) upset Capital on the road 44-35.

The New Mexico Activities Association will announce selections for the state tournaments on Sunday.
