Eagles finally tipoff, as hoop season heats up

The high school basketball season is now underway for all county teams, with a full slate of games this week.

In boys action Tuesday, Belen (0-1) opened the campaign at home with a 53-51 loss to Valley. The Eagles led by ten points early in the fourth quarter, but poor foul shooting helped the Vikings storm back to win. Belen meets Las Vegas Robertson Thursday in the opening round of a tournament at Sandia Prep.

Following an overtime victory Saturday at Espanola Valley, Valencia (2-2) fell to Del Norte 54-46. Saturday, VHS is at Taos. Los Lunas (1-2) was handled at home 76-48 by Cleveland. The Tigers meet Alamogordo Thursday to start the Artesia tournament.

On the girls’ schedule Tuesday, Belen (1-0) raced to a 20-6 lead at Valley and went on to win 57-41. Alyssa Trujillo had 21 points, while Itzel Caraveo added 13. The home opener for BHS is Thursday against Manzano.

After losing to Gallup and edging Clovis to start the season, Valencia (2-1) Tuesday defeated Del Norte 61-44, with Jaiden Montgomery scoring 21 points and Naima Corrales 20 points. The Jaguars played Cleveland Thursday at the Capital City Tournament, falling 41-36 to the 5A Storm.

Los Lunas is coming off a 49-26 victory Saturday over Centennial and will try to go 3-0 Thursday at home against Eldorado.
