The Belen Hurricanes swim team just completed what coach Alysha Coffey called “a successful season, for sure,” wrapping up competition Saturday in the Sundance Championships at Albuquerque Academy.

The Hurricanes qualified 27 competitors in individual and relay races. Highlights include third-place finishes by Juniper Barillara, 9-10 girls, in 25-yard butterfly; and Logan Martinez, 13-14 boys, in the 50-yard freestyle.

In relay events, the 9-10 girls were second in the medley and fourth in the free. The Belen 13-14 boys were third in the medley and fourth in the free, while the 15-18 girls brought home fourth place in the medley.

Coffey said the Hurricanes bounced back this year from a big drop in participation following the COVID pandemic. Participation doubled to about 70 swimmers, ranging in age from 4 to 17 years old.
