Young soccer players scramble on the fields at the Los Lunas Sports Complex Saturday, as AYSO makes a return following a long absence.

Admittedly, the return Saturday of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) to Valencia County after an absence of about five years was a bit “chaotic.” However, the overwhelming feeling was

“Joy. Just so much joy and happiness,” according to Samantha Garza, the region 515 commissioner for AYSO. “Right now, we have 231 players, so it’s crazy.”

Opening day was at the Los Lunas Sports Complex, with Eagle Park in Belen set to host the teams this Saturday. Games will rotate between the two venues until Nov. 1, when the fall season ends.

Torianna and Domingo Archuleta, of Los Lunas, settled in on the grass to watch their children, Tatum and Adeline, who is only 4 years old, take the field.

“That’s the best part, that the younger kids can play,” said Torianna, who believes there are plenty of benefits. “Getting some friends, some structure, some discipline. Just have fun.”

Local AYSO leadership is also learning, according Garza, when it comes to scheduling, securing equipment and communication.

“The kids seemed to have a great time,” said Garza. “I’m just so proud of what we’ve accomplished with my board members, the coaches and the families.”

More referees are needed, so a free clinic will be held at 12 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Los Lunas Sports Complex.

Garza says the organization could also use more setup and take down help, particularly with nets and signage.
