Key games await volleyball squads

On Tuesday, Los Lunas volleyball players Lauren Shiplet, in black, and Mellody Chavez, number eleven, along with coach Tanya Sanchez, were recognized for reaching career milestones.

It’s an important week on the volleyball court, with postseason brackets released Sunday. Tuesday, Los Lunas (14-6, 7-0) defeated West Mesa 3-0, giving Tanya Sanchez her 100th coaching victory. Also, Tigers’ libero Lauren Shiplet was honored for recording 1500 career digs and outside hitter Mellody Chavez for 750 kills. Thursday, LLHS plays at Albuquerque High (14-8, 6-1) for the District 5-5A title.

Following Wednesday’s game at Highland, past the News-Bulletin print deadline, Valencia (13-8, 4-2) hosts Belen (16-6, 4-3) Thursday in a game which will decide runner-up in District 5-4A. The outcome could guarantee a spot in the 4A state tournament for the winner.
