Eight college softball teams will play in the South Central Regional Tournament in Los Lunas this weekend.

LOS LUNAS — For the third consecutive year, Los Lunas Sports Complex will be the site Division II college softball with the return of the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

Starting Friday and continuing through Sunday, players from eight teams, including host Western New Mexico University, will take the fields.

“This is a great place for it,” said Ashley Hickman, WNMU head coach, praising the village of Los Lunas and the recreation staff. “It’s a nice facility and a really nice area of New Mexico we can keep coming back to.” The tournament will utilize three fields at the complex.

Hickman believes the tournament, with matchups determined in advance, is the perfect start for the opening weekend of college softball.

“Each team is going to play five games. For an opening weekend that’s really good,” providing quality games while not wearing down the athletes, according to Hickman.

Joining WNMU in the field are Eastern New Mexico University, New Mexico Highlands University, Sul Ross State, West Texas A&M, Adams State, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Simon Fraser University of British Columbia, Canada.

The tournament begins 10 a.m., Friday, with WNMU playing New Mexico Highlands. The final game is Sunday at 12:30 p.m., when Eastern New Mexico faces WNMU. Admission for 5-12 years is $5 per day; 13 years and older is $10 per day and a three-day tournament pass is $25. Children 5 years old and younger are free.
