New Mexico Jags Invite attracts young track standouts

LOS LUNAS — The second annual New Mexico Jags Invitational track and field meet on Saturday brought around 400 young athletes to Los Lunas High School.

“We have a lot of strong athletes out here,” said Jorge Gaxiola, meet director and founder of the host New Mexico Jags track and field club. “We’re bringing track and field back to Valencia County.”

According to Gaxiola, the Jags posted Top 10 times nationally on Saturday in the boys 8U 4x100 relay and in the boys 15/16 4x100 relay.

Jags’ runner Sophia Cox, of Belen, 4A State Champion in the 400 meters, competed Saturday in the prestigious Greater Southwest Classic in Albuquerque. Cox entered the open division, finishing second overall in the 400 meters (57.30 seconds) and 22nd in the 200 meters (25.68).
