Notes from the sports desk: Football edition
This column was written on the eve of the NFL season and shortly after the start of college football. So if there is anything that seems out of date or flat out wrong, that’s my excuse.
Eck marks the spot
It’s hard to remember a Lobo football game, let alone a loss, that was as interesting and enjoyable to watch as New Mexico at Michigan. It was a blast to see the enthusiasm of Jason Eck, coaching his first game at UNM.
His between-the-legs trick play for a touchdown is an early contender for National Play of the Year. I laughed when I saw the replays. The team was poised while facing more talent and a hostile environment. It was only one game, but what a game!
Man(ning) up
The expectations for Texas quarterback Arch Manning heading into the season opener at Ohio State were out of control, and vastly unfair. Yes, he plays for a college football blue blood. Yes, he has that famous name on the back of his jersey. However, for crying out loud, it was only his third start, at the home of the defending national champions.
Homecoming x 3
It may be something of a fluke, but homecoming football games for Valencia, Belen and Los Lunas will each be played this Friday. I understand scheduling can be tricky, but give a sports reporter a break!
In this case, VCNB colleague Kenn Rodriguez will have those duties because of my previous commitment. I owe you, Kenn.
Cowboys talk, infinitum
There’s not much to add about the Dallas Cowboys trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers except to say, “Can we talk about anything else, please?” Nope.
The conversation about Parsons and a new contract have raged since March and now will continue through the rest of the season and beyond. Why did it happen? Who got the better deal? How will the Cowboys use their 2026 draft picks? Sigh. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has managed to stay in the spotlight more than the team. How ‘bout them Jerrys?
Spit-take
As I’m writing this, the afternoon after the Cowboys lost to the Eagles, the conversation isn’t about the game but about the spit. Before the first snap of the game, Philly’s Jalen Carter was ejected after he spat on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott.
Some argue that because Prescott seemed to contribute to the confrontation, Carter shouldn’t face a suspension. I disagree. Spit on someone is disgusting, unsanitary and the ultimate insult. With the NFL emphasizing sportsmanship this season, I suspect Carter, who has apologized, will get a one game suspension and a hefty fine.
Hot takes
• Russell Wilson, now of the New York Giants, will win NFL Most Improved Player.
• The Dallas Cowboys will be in the hunt for a playoff spot, but just miss out.
• For the first time in 24 years, a non-quarterback will be the Most Valuable Player. If you’re looking for a name, the crystal ball is a bit cloudy.
• Philadelphia will repeat as Super Bowl champs, edging Buffalo.
• Taylor Swift will NOT perform at the Super Bowl.
