Powersports: Hall of Patience
BHS Hall of Fame
When it was announced that Belen High School was creating a BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, I thought it was a great idea. Still do.
However, those behind its establishment should be prepared for blow back once the inaugural HOF class is revealed at the football game tonight, Thursday. I have no doubt those first members will be fully deserving of the honor, but others who don’t make the initial cut, and their supporters, may feel disappointed and disrespected. Take a deep breath.
Keep in mind, Eagle Nation has a long history of athletic success, and a long list of legitimate hopefuls for the honor. As I’m often reminded, be patient.
“B” is for Belen
It is not unusual when traveling across the country to see community or school pride showcased by a letter or letters in a prominent location. For example, you can see an “LL” formed by rocks on El Cerro de Los Lunas, repainted annually by the LLHS senior class.
For years, a large “B” looked down on Belen High School, just west of I-25. However, there is no longer public access to maintain the letter, so the “B” has been breaking up.
While that may be disappointing to some Belenites, surely there is an alternative.
A new “B,” perhaps with an image of an Eagle created by a talented art student, could be placed outside somewhere on the BHS campus. The image might be constructed of wood, stone or cinder block. Build it high, maybe on a type of riser or platform, so it can be seen.
It could be located inside the football stadium or at the west end of the athletic parking lot. If it’s placed correctly, it could be seen on campus and from the interstate. Students could maintain it, with seniors signing it as part of graduation.
I wanna get out of here!
A Los Lunas football player on the sidelines during the Tigers 38-24 victory over Albuquerque High a couple of Saturday’s ago at Milne Stadium took the words right out of my mouth.
The game was taking forever, three hours long. The wind was whipping. The penalty flags were flying. The officials had endless long discussions. Finally, after yet another delay, this player screamed, “Come on! I wanna get out of here.” I’ll second that.
Just missed
Perhaps it could be blamed on the unpredictability of the NFL campaign, but my preseason prognostications have been off the mark. Way off.
Without going into all the gruesome details, one of my misfires was that quarterback Russell Wilson would be the Comeback Player of the Year. Well, three weeks into the season he was benched by the New York Giants.
At least my forecast that Taylor Swift would not be performing at the Super Bowl was right on. Yippee!
NBA gambling scandal
A couple of thoughts on the NBA gambling uproar/scandal. First, remember that nobody has been convicted of anything. Second, with the legalization of sports betting and many professional sports leagues in partnerships with betting sites, I fear this is only the beginning.
The most tantalizing part of the accusations, the underground poker parties complete with x-ray tables, hidden cameras and the Mafia, is straight out of a Hollywood movie. Bizzaro.
Ugly American golf fans
Americans have long had a reputation in some parts of the world as being, well, arrogant and rude. That phrase, Ugly Americans, came back to me last month during the Ryder Cup.
Golf is supposed to be the most dignified of all sports, yet the actions of many fans against the European team at Bethpage Black in New York was disgusting and embarrassing.
The solution may be simple: cut off all alcohol and toss the yahoos out.
Still waiting
When I arrived in New Mexico in 1985, one of the hot topics around Albuquerque was the need for an indoor arena for concerts and, perhaps, sporting events.
Forty years later, the need is still there.
Can you believe Tingley Coliseum remains the go-to spot? Rio Rancho has a nice facility, but golly, it’s such a long drive.
Photo focus
One of the odd pleasures in my life is flipping through a newspaper, magazine or the internet to look at what is going on in the background of photographs.
Yes, the focus of the photo might be on the player scoring a touchdown, a celebrity giving an autograph or a child’s first birthday, but sometimes what is most interesting may be inconspicuous at first.
There might be an out-of-control fan screaming, an exasperated coach with head bowed or a clueless spectator on a phone missing the play-of-the-year or picking their ... teeth.
