LOS LUNAS — A Valentine’s Day visit by Lauren Shiplet, of Los Lunas, to New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs turned into an athletic scholarship and a chance to continue her volleyball career.
Shiplet, a 5A first team All State selection for the Tigers, will be a defensive specialist and libero for the Thunderbirds.
“I want to see what college volleyball is all about,” said Shiplet, who admits she wasn’t sure if an opportunity would arrive. “I just kept pushing, trying to find a home. I’m so excited.”
If the college game is to her liking, Shiplet hopes to eventually find a four-year school to test her skills.
“I feel the first two years are going to give me an idea if I want to keep playing, but I’m pretty sure I will.” Shiplet is undecided about what she will study academically.
