Take two: Eagles sweep Spartans
BELEN — Belen stepped away from the District 5-4A baseball race Tuesday, sweeping Bernalillo in a doubleheader.
The Eagles (12-6) downed the Spartans 18-6 and 14-8 in what BHS coach Justin Miller called a “gritty” effort. A nine-run second inning in the opener set the tone for the Eagles.
“I’m proud of the boys for never giving up,” Miller said. “They were constantly answering back.”
Also Tuesday, Valencia (8-11, 0-2) had just three hits in a 12-1 loss to St. Pius at home in District 5-4A.
Matty Castillo drove in the tying and winning runs in the seventh inning to lift Los Lunas (11-7, 3-0) past Rio Grande 4-3. The Tigers, who have won 10 straight home games, stayed unbeaten in District 5-5A.
The rest of the week is busy. VHS is at Highland on Friday, BHS hosts Grants and LLHS visits Albuquerque High. Albuquerque Academy visits Belen on Saturday.
