Many Senior Olympians from Valencia County are giving thanks this holiday for having a successful and fun 2025 of competition at the state and national levels.

Some local athletes, pictured below, took part last summer in the National Senior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa.

Pictured left: The father-daughter bowling team of Joe Sanchez, Los Lunas, and Julie Tays, Bosque Farms, placed fifth in mixed doubles in the 55-59 age category. Tays also took sixth in women’s singles bowling, 55-59, while Sanchez finished twelfth in 80-84 men’s singles.

Phil Gregory, Los Lunas, finished fourth in the hammer throw and fifth in high jump in the 80-84 age category. Gregory is pictured second from left, above.

Pictured above: While playing with the Canyon Net Zia’s in 70+ basketball, Sharon Tregembo of Los Lunas captured eighth place. Tregembo, third from right in picture at the top of page, also won a bronze medal playing softball with the Jazz.

Other Valencia County residents who competed at the National Senior Olympics include:

Richard Herrera, Los Chavez: hammer throw, eighth place (65-69)

Carolina Kearns, Belen: bench press, 11th place; square, 14th place, dead lift 16th place

Brenda Meister, Belen: personal best discus and hammer throw (65-69)

Theresa Padilla, Bosque Farms: cornhole
