The season ended for the Valencia Jaguars after a 1-0 loss to Aztec in the first round of the State High School Girls Soccer Championships.

VHS head coach Kimberly Chavez-Burkhard said the 11th seeded Jaguars had a strong first half, but neither team scored.

VHS became a little less aggressive in the second half, according to Chavez-Burkhard, and the sixth-seeded Tigers scored the only goal of the match with about 25 minutes left.

“Aztec had a breakaway on the side,” according to Chavez-Burkhard. “The ball hit a few players and went in.”

The Jaguars, the only Valencia County team to qualify for state, finished with a 6-10-1 record.

Chavez-Burkhard was proud of the team this season. “We had a few bumps on the road with injuries but we came together and played well.”

The game was played in Aztec on artificial turf under the lights on a cool evening.
