WGA Pro-Am, club championship winners crowned

The September Women’s Golf Association events were highlighted by the Club Championship competition on Sept. 10 and 17 and by the Pro-Am Tournament on Sept. 24.

Repeating as Ladies 18 Club Champion was Berta Murzyn, and the repeat winner as the Ladies 9 Champion was Anna Martinez.

The Pro Am Tournament grew to six teams this year. Team Patrick Valero took first place with team members Victoria Valero, Regina Chavez, and Kathryn Bayless.

Team Craig Tabet came in second with members Fran Griffeth, Sandy Watts and Anna Martinez. Third place went to Team Carlos Carrasco with team members Berta Murzyn, Bernadette Jaramillo and Marilyn Winters.

Other pros who led teams were Carlos Carrasco, Clinton Tabet, Miche Tellez and Max Montoya. Plans for next year are for two Pro-Ams being played, one in the spring and one in the fall.

The month’s scramble winners on Sept.3 were Marilyn Jaramillo, Fran Griffeth, Jeannie Burleson, and Bayless. Second place went to Sandy Watts, Beverly Turley, Murzyn and Joanne Romero.

During the month there was a birdie plus a chip-in birdie scored by Murzyn, and one chip-in was made by Tammie Fuller.

Several ladies played at the Red/Green Chile Tournament at Elephant Butte on Sept. 29. The team of Janelle Lowry, Griffeth, M. Jaramillo and Winters scored third gross in their flight.

October activities will center around the annual Fall Frolics Tournament on Monday, Oct. 20, which brings in teams from across the state, as well as local teams. Regular play days are scheduled for all Wednesdays and Saturdays.
