Women’s Golf Association crowns club champions
RIO COMMUNITIES — It was Club Championship time for the Women’s Golf Association in September.
In the Ladies 9 competition, Anna Martinez, who won in 2023, repeated as winner, with Berta Murzyn capturing the title in the Ladies 18 division.
Murzyn added this title to her Ladies 18 President’s Cup win in July.
A Pro-Am Tournament was played on Sept. 25. Bragging rights went to the team of Kassandra Tabet, Janel Lowery and Marilyn Winters. They were led by pro Clinton Tabet. Pro Craig Tabet led the second place team of Paula Valdez, Tinky Ulivarri and Josanne Cossio.
On Sept. 4, the meeting day scramble First Gross winners were Murzyn, Marla Wersonick and Beverly Turley. First Net winners in the scramble were Jennifer Montano, Fran Griffeth and Dorothy Lindberg.
A chip-in birdie was recorded by Martinez, with Edie Redfearn-Moore scoring 3 chip-ins.
Kathryn Bayless and Marilyn Jaramillo each had one. Special kudos go to Tammie Fuller who broke 100 for the first time in her golfing career.
Representing the WGA at the Sierra del Rio Invitational in Elephant Butte, the team of Murzyn, Bayless, Redfearn-Moore and Fuller placed first in their flight, as did Jaramillo, Winters, Griffeth and Beth Taylor in their flight.
The highlight for October will be the popular Fall Frolics on Monday, Oct. 21. In addition to local players, competitors from various parts of the state will play in the 18-hole competition.
