Real ID enforcement deadline extended to May 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently announced it was again extending the deadline for full enforcement of the REAL ID Act until May 7, 2025.

Full enforcement — requiring a Real ID to board a commercial flight or enter certain federal facilities — had been expected to begin on May 3, 2023. Homeland Security officials notified driver licensing officials across the country of their intent to extend the deadline. The REAL ID Act was enacted in 2005 to improve security at federal facilities and in commercial aviation.

Currently, 77 percent of New Mexico credentials are Real ID compliant. New Mexico also offers a standard license for New Mexicans who are unable to provide the necessary documentation for a Real ID license or who do not want or need one.
