Daniel D. Fernandez VFW Post 9676 Senior Vice Commander John Tull, left, and Junior Vice Commander Tony Griego, right, presented a certificate of appreciation to Los Lunas Walmart Supercenter Store Manager Issac Esquivel on Dec. 4, for the gratitude and appreciation felt by all VFW Post 9676 members for Walmart’s support of Valencia County veterans.

One of the post’s only methods of raising funds is through its distribution of its Buddy Poppy artificial flowers to the public. The Los Lunas Walmart Supercenter allowed Post 9676 to distribute its Buddy Poppies at the entrance to the store both on May 25 (Memorial Day weekend) and on Nov. 16 (the weekend after Veterans Day).

The post thanks all Valencia County Walmart shoppers for making both the Memorial Day and Veterans Day events tremendously successful.

VFW National by-laws require that all donations received by all VFW Posts from the distribution of the “Buddy Poppy” artificial flower be placed in the post’s Relief Fund to be used only for the following purposes:

• For the aid, assistance, relief, and comfort of needy or disabled veterans or members of the Armed Forces and their dependents, and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans.

• For the maintenance and expansion of the VFW National Home and other facilities devoted exclusively to the benefit and welfare of the dependents, widows, and orphans of disabled, needy, or deceased veterans or members of the Armed Forces.

• For necessary expenses in providing entertainment, care and assistance to hospitalized veterans or members of the Armed Forces.

• For veterans’ rehabilitation, welfare and service work.
