Walmart Distribution Center celebrates 25th anniversary
LOS LUNAS—In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Walmart Distribution Center, the staff held a week-long celebration, with the main event, a company picnic, on Saturday, Aug. 3, when all associates were able to invite their family members.
They cooked close to 200 pounds of fajitas for all to enjoy, and activities consisted of table games for children, tug of war, basketball shooting and more
“We also offered warehouse tours for family members, which went really well,” said Randy Griego, one of the center’s operations managers, who has worked for the company since the beginning in 1998. “Family members do not really understand what we do with Walmart supply chain. Our warehouse consists of two chambers, dry warehouse and perishable warehouse. Combined, it is 980,000 square feet.”
Employee’s families were amazed at the size of the facility. One of the largest call outs was going into the freezer, which is about 150,000 square feet. In addition to tours, employees also set up a petting zoo, but instead of animals they sectioned off a place where they parked all equipment, such as forklifts, QPR lifts and more.
The celebration was a hit as employees’ children were allowed to get on the equipment and pretend they were working.
After the company picnic, they cooked for every shift the rest of the week.
Engaging with the community is a priority for the Walmart Distribution Center. This past year, they have volunteered with many organizations, such as American Cancer Society, Valencia County Alzheimer’s Walk, UNM Children’s Hospital, CASA Esperanza Partnership Holiday Drive, Ann Parish Elementary School, Belen Schools and more. These contributions include the employees’ time, monetary donations and food donations.
