Barbara Ann Major Ward Eslinger

Barbara Ann Major Ward Eslinger, 84, passed away peacefully on Nov. 1, 2024, at her home in Los Lunas.

Born on June 7, 1940, in Albuquerque, to Bob Major and Virginia Culver Major, Barbara lived a life rich in love, compassion and dedication to her family and the natural world.

Barbara married her beloved husband, Galen Eslinger, on Jan. 17, 1974. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with adventure and joy. Their bond was a testament to love and partnership that lasted more than 50 years.

A passionate lover of the outdoors, Barbara found joy in her garden, nurturing plants and respecting all of God’s creations. Her compassion extended to animals, especially her cherished Sheltie dogs and cats. In her youth, she dedicated herself to rescuing animals, from mountain lions to bull snakes, nursing them back to health and ensuring they found their forever homes.

Barbara worked as a licensed practical nurse in Utah before returning to New Mexico with Galen in 2003. They both devoted their time to the Los Lunas Fire Department, serving their community with pride.

A genealogist at heart, Barbara cherished her family, which included seven children, Josie Fald, Joe Ward, Bryan Ward (Patricia), Phil Eslinger (Cindy), Wendy Rappleye, Ron Ward (Deborah), and Robert Ward (Byron Batista); 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers, Connie Feest, Sue Holmes, Becky Major, Danny Cory, and Dennis Cory. She found immense joy in their stories and connections.

Barbara was preceded in death by her son, Kurt Eslinger; and her brother, Mike Major.

Barbara’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her love for life, family, and nature will be remembered fondly as a lasting legacy. Her lovely smile lit up the world and will be sorely missed.
