Louis F. Huning, 74, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on Wednesday, June 5.

Louis, or Louie as he was affectionately known, was born on June 10, 1949, to Fred and Ruth Ellen Huning. Louie attended the Los Lunas Schools, graduating in 1967 before attending UNM, where he graduated with his Bachelor of Business Administration. While attending UNM, he put himself through college working as a manager at JC Penny’s.

After graduating, he went back to Los Lunas and worked with his father running the Huning’s family hardware store, Huning Ace Hardware. He operated the store until its closing in 1994. After the closing, he ran Huning Limited Partnership with his uncle, Jack Huning, and later cousin, Nancy Schmierbach, where they were involved with cattle ranching and land development.

Louie was elected mayor of Los Lunas in 1982 and was re-elected to seven consecutive terms, resigning in 2009 due to his health. Louie was always quick to give credit for the village’s success to all the amazing employees at the village of Los Lunas. Louie served his community faithfully, energetically and worked tirelessly to ensure its prosperity for future generations.

Louie was involved in numerous organizations throughout his life and career, including the Los Lunas/Bosque Farms Chamber of Commerce, Wells Fargo Bank Board, Valencia Presbyterian Hospital Board, Middle Rio Grande Council of Governments, Mid Rio Grande Mayor Caucus, UNM Valencia Campus Development Board, was one of the founding members of the Los Lunas Rotary Club and a graduate of Leadership New Mexico.

Louie’s greatest joy was his family and he loved them unconditionally. Louie was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and brother, and will be dearly missed.

Louie is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Nancy; daughter, Ruth Ann, and son-in-law, Thomas Gonzales; son, Louis Jr.; grandson, Samuel Gonzales; sister, Kathy Stallings (Clayton), along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Louie is preceded in death by his grandparents, Fred and Cora Dils, Fred Huning Sr., Maude Huning and Ethel Huning; his parents, Fred Jr. and Ruth Ellen Huning; and brother, Charles Huning.

A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, June 13, in the chapel of Noblin Funeral Service, 418 W. Reinken Ave., Belen. The Funeral Requiem will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 14, at the Cathedral of St. John, 318 Silver Ave., SW, Albuquerque.

Following the service, a procession will carry Louie through his beloved Los Lunas to Terrace Grove Cemetery in Belen for burial.

Pallbearers will be Steve Roehrig, Alan Dils, Cliff Dils, Clayton Stallings, Kurt Stallings and Cody Mullen. Honorary pallbearers are Phil Bullard, John Mountain, Sam Mountain, Brian Lengel, Donnie Roehrig, Charles Griego, Don Leach, George Hobbs, Larry Guggino, Joseph Aragon and David Vigil.
