Belen’s Diego Vigil competed Friday in four events, including the 200 individual medley, at the State Swimming and Diving Championship.

ALBUQUERQUE — Members of the boys’ teams from Belen and Valencia competed last weekend in the New Mexico Swimming & Diving Championship at Albuquerque Academy.

Diego Vigil, of BHS, set a personal record in the 200 freestyle, qualifying for the B-Final. Friday, Vigil swam four races, two individual and two relays, in a short period of time.

“These past two weeks, I’ve been focusing on my endurance,” in practice said Vigil. “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.”

The Eagles’ Nehemiah Sanchez raced in the 50 freestyle, and joined teammates Vigil, Cole Rodriguez and Arbin Apodaca in the 200-medley relay, with Sanchez, Vigil, Rodriguez and Isaiah Marez rounding out the 200-freestyle relay team.

Andres Burkhard, of Valencia, competed in the 100 breaststroke.

No Valencia County athletes brought home medals.
