District basketball begins

The district high school basketball season tipped off Tuesday across New Mexico, with Valencia County boys teams at home and the girls on the road. 

Girls basketball

After dominating three games to capture the Hope Tournament, No. 6 Los Lunas (17-2, 1-0) opened play in District 5-5A with a 67-21 victory at West Mesa. In District 5-4A, sixth-ranked Valencia (13-5, 1-0) handled Grants 60-39 on the road, while visiting Belen (7-11, 0-1) lost 65-36 to St. Pius.

Boys basketball

In District 5-4A, VHS (12-6, 1-0) took care of Grants 63-50 and BHS (11-8, 1-0) edged St. Pius 61-58. LLHS (6-13, 0-1) came up just short against West Mesa 46-43 in District 5-5A.
