District basketball tournaments underway

VHS, BHS boys set for rematch

Belen, in maroon, defeated Valencia in double-overtime Friday. The teams will meet Thursday in the district tournament.

District tournament play is underway this week in basketball, with some teams playing for state playoff seeding while others are scrambling to stay in the picture.

All three local boys teams played Tuesday and all three won.

Belen (17-10), coming off a thrilling 80-72 double-overtime victory at Valencia, defeated Grants in District 5-4A 70-63.

Visiting Valencia (15-12) upset St. Pius 52-42. Thursday at 6 p.m., VHS will be at BHS for a third meeting this season, with the Eagles winning the previous two games.

In District 5-5A, Los Lunas (10-17) protected home court with a 52-29 win over Rio Grande. Thursday, the Tigers travel to Albuquerque High.

It’s a battle for the loose ball Friday between Valencia’s Nevaeh Sers, No. 12, and Belen’s Lydia Hull, No. 4 in a game won by VHS.

In girls action Monday, Belen (7-20) lost 57-44 at Highland, the Eagles twelfth straight setback.

District champion Valencia, which defeated BHS last week 48-26 to end the regular season, won’t play until Friday when they host either Highland or St. Pius.

On Wednesday, Los Lunas (22-4) entertained Rio Grande.

The brackets for the state basketball tournaments will be released Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association.
