LLHS coach Larry Padilla nominated for national honor
LOS LUNAS — The National High School Athletic Coaches Association has named Larry Padilla, of Los Lunas, one of eight finalists for National Cross Country Coach of the Year.
The honor is a recognition of Padilla’s accomplishments in more than three decades of coaching at Los Lunas High School.
The NHSACA reviews coaches’ won/loss records, district championships, state titles and other contributions and honors over the years. Padilla is a member of the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame and, in December, was chosen as the New Mexico Girls Coach of the Year.
Padilla calls himself, “A student of the sport,” learning about cross country wherever he can.
“I have also had the opportunity to work with some great kids, parents and the school system that has supported the program,” Padilla said.
A letter to Padilla from the NHSACA said, in part, “This reflects on your success, service and honors throughout your career. It also recognizes your programs: assistant coaches, athletes, school, and community.”
The national NHSACA convention, in which coaches in 19 sports categories will be honored, will be held June 24-27 in Bismarck, N.D.
Padilla has been asked to give a presentation about the LLHS program during the convention.
“I feel honored to represent our school and community,” Padilla said.
