Local high school wrestlers make mark at two tournaments

Valencia County wrestlers had top-of-the-podium finishes in Albuquerque and Aztec over the weekend.

At the Joe Vivian Classic, the Belen boys and girls each had an individual champion, as did the Los Lunas girls. The meet was hosted by Atrisco Heritage Academy.

Ryder Williamson, of BHS, captured the title at 285 pounds in the boys tournament, registering a second period pin in the final. The Eagles were sixth as a team, one spot behind Los Lunas, which had an impressive nine wrestlers who placed.

Volcano Vista soared to the team championship in the 31-team field, well ahead of Rocky Mountain (Colorado) and La Cueva.

In the girls’ tournament, the Eagles Olyvia Sanchez improved to 24-2 on her way to the girls title at 115 pounds. Haidyn Garley, of LLHS, was the champion at 190 pounds. In the girls 30 team field, host AHA took the championships with Belen eighth and Los Lunas 14th.

Clash at the Coliseum

Valencia’s Alexis Avis-Labus, who won an individual title, is carried aloft by her brother Elijah following the Clash of the Coliseum in Aztec.

In Aztec, the Valencia boys and girls took part in the Clash at the Coliseum.

The Jaguars finished 10th out of 33 teams in the boys meet, which used a dual format. After going 4-2 during the preliminary competition, VHS went 3-1 in the bronze pool to earn a top ten finish with a 7-3 record.

The VHS girls were eighth in the more traditional bracket format, with Farmington the team champion.

Alexis Avis-Labus was one of the standouts of the entire tournament, winning the title at 105 pounds with quick pins in each match.

Also for the Jaguars, Adriana Berni (100) and Emma Ramzey (135) each took fourth in their weight classes.
