“MELTDOWN” brings USA Track meet to Los Lunas

Almost 1,000 competitors representing ten teams took part in the inaugural Memorial Day Weekend Meltdown Track & Field Invitational May 27 at Los Lunas High School. USA Track and Field sanctioned the meet, which had open and masters divisions, with ages ranging from five to 70 years old.

The Meltdown was hosted by New Mexico Jags, a club team which is working to build a feeder system for the LLHS track program. George Gaxiola, the meet director, brought the Jags with him when he moved from Albuquerque to Los Lunas.

“The ultimate goal is to help build a strong program for the high school (LLHS) and to bring some recognition to the young kids running in USA Track and Field,” Gaxiola said. “We will most definitely be back next year.”

The Meltdown prepares many of the athletes for the USATF New Mexico Association Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, June 10-11 in Rio Rancho.
