The Los Lunas girls basketball team felt the sting of a loss for the first time this season, falling to Hobbs 50-47 in a pre-Christmas clash of top 5A girls basketball teams.

The Tigers (9-1) were coming off winning the title at the Holiday Hoopla in Las Cruces, with Valencia (9-3) the consolation champion. VHS played Tuesday at Las Vegas Robertson, past the News-Bulletin print deadline.

Elsewhere in girls basketball, Belen (4-7) started the week at the Goddard Holiday Tournament, losing to the host Rockets 58-23.

In boys hoops, BHS (5-4) and VHS (5-4) began play Monday in the 71st Stu Clark Invitational in Las Vegas, N.M.

The Eagles (5-5) opened against Pecos, losing 60-52 while the Jaguars (5-4) defeated Sandia Prep 66-49.LLHS (5-7) ended 2025 Saturday with a 53-39 victory against Piedra Vista.
