Doubles teams took to the courts in July, competing in two tournaments benefiting the high school tennis programs at Belen, Valencia and Los Lunas.

The high school tennis teams at Belen, Los Lunas and Valencia held fundraising tournaments in July, each with good support from the community.

Sixteen doubles teams took part in each event, with the same pair winning both.

The Two Cats Tennis Tournament, held at Huning Ranch in Los Lunas, benefited both the Valencia and Los Lunas programs. Former VHS Jaguar standout Xavier Castillo teamed up with Roma Cordova, a one-time BHS Eagle.

Castillo and Cordova, who each won district championships in high school, captured the Two Cats title on July 13, and followed that up one week later with a repeat performance in Belen.

Xavier Castillo and Roma Cordova won both the Big Cat and Belen doubles tennis tournaments, which raised money for Valencia County high school tennis programs.

Second place in the Los Lunas event went to Anthony Correa and Jeff Stynen, while the runner-up team in Belen was David Grega and Riley Cordova.

Chrissy Cordova, BHS coach, called the Belen fundraiser, “A fun tournament with great weather and lots of laughs, creating a wonderful atmosphere.”
