BELEN — A $1,000 sponsorship from the Belen Shooting Sports Association helped Isabella Garcia attend this week’s National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Des Moines, Iowa, where the 14-year-old is competing in the light rifle shooting competition.

“It truly means so much to me,” Garcia said of the sponsorship, which helped cover the travel and entry fees for the NJHFR. “They’re great people.”

Light rifle shooting features three positions starting with prone, followed by standing and then kneeling.

Garcia, who lives in Jarales and attends an online charter school, began shooting sports in 4-H and now practices at the BSSA facility and at a relative’s range.

Garcia first tried shooting on a whim about four years ago.

“I originally thought I’d shoot for a day and then it blossomed into so much more,” she said.

The NJHFR, which is best known for traditional rodeo events, wraps up Saturday. The National High School Finals Rodeo, which will also feature Valencia County cowboys and cowgirls, begins July 13 in Rock Springs, Wyo.
